Businessman
J. B. manages a big business which also happens to be one of the largest jails in Texas, housing over 1000 prisoners, a department of over 285 personnel, has over 75 vehicles and feeds more than 3,000 meals a day, while overseeing an annual budget of over $15 million. He was featured in front page lead story in the Dallas Morning News. He is a Texas licensed auctioneer.

Community Leader
Recently presented with the first ever, "Excellence in Community Service" award by the National Chapter of The Daughters of the American Revolution. He serves on II Boards of Directors, chairman of 5 and was co-founder of the East Texas Crisis Center which has become a safe haven for abused women and children.

Rancher
On his ranch in Smith County, J. B. raises registered Longhorn cattle. A menagerie containing over 15 horses, various hogs and chickens, 1 flying squirrel and an emu named "Big Bird".

Texas Sheriff
He has been continuously elected Smith County Sheriff since 1976. Sheriff Smith holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas. Sheriff Smith is a graduate of the National F.B.I. Academy. He is a Licensed Forensic Hypnotist. He is the President of Texas Sheriffs Association, 2002 - 2003. He is a Host of 2 weekly television shows, one local instructing citizens on personal safety, the other a nationally broadcast program on the Law Enforcement Television Network entitled "Corrections Digest".
